SPECIFIC DIRECTIONS

FOR EACH JOURNAL ENTRY

* Choose one passage for every 40 pages.

* Copy the lines out of the book, place them in quotation marks, and cite the passage.

Here is an example:

"Then from down the beach, carried by the wind, they heard their daughter's voice." (p. 15)

* Then respond to the passage in your own words. Write as much as you want, but no less than five sentences. Here is an example:

How horrible! My family has had so many wonderful days at the beach that I have nothing but happy memories of barbecues, Frisbee, sand castles, throwing sticks for my dog, and getting soaked. What a terrifying moment for the parents and the child. Just when they were relaxing and having fun, terror strikes! I wonder if there are going to be more nasty surprises? Why is the author putting in all these brief stories of different incidents? I wonder why they left this out of the movie??

As you can see from the example, several responses can be made from one quote (connections to one's own life, speculation, reflection are some of the responses made above). Also the writing is free-flowing.
