Probabilities of Genetic Traits

Advance Preparation

This lesson is intended for students who have an understanding of probability. If your students need preparatory instruction, use the lessons in the "Basic Concepts" math section of this binder. This lesson will take approximately three class periods. Lower ability students may find the student hand-out "PROBABILITIES OF GENETIC TRAITS" difficult. Reading through the lesson with your students, and working examples as you go is probably a good way to handle this situation. Make a copy of "PROBABILITIES OF GENETIC TRAITS" for each of your students.

Introduction

This lesson deals with calculating the probability of genetic traits being passed to an offspring. Students will start out with a review of the probabilities involved in the rolling two dice. Probability of genetics begins with looking at the inheritance possibilities based on one allele, and concludes with two allele inheritance.
