Your task is to hold hearings for the purpose of coming up with recommendations that will state the conditions under which DNA evidence will be allowed in court. Your primary concern is to adopt recommendations that improve the accuracy of DNA analysis. You know that when you make your report before the main policy making committee of NATL, you will have to have soundly researched evidence to support your recommendations You will conduct a hearing where your classmates will present recommendations that they will support with evidence. Your most important responsibility during the hearing is to remain impartial while listening to the information and arguments. This will allow you to make the best decision for NATL. These instructions will help you conduct the hearing € Because you want to maintain your impartiality, you must not discuss these instructions and research with anyone, except with the other members of the panel. A breach of secrecy might invalidate the findings of the hearing. € To prepare yourself for the hearing review your notes from the videos and research material that your teacher provides and ask: Why has the court or prosecution disallowed DNA evidence in the past? Under what conditions could that evidence be made more accurate? € Brainstorm a list of recommendations. € Write your recommendations and evidence on handout #5. € Review your recommendations with other members of the panel before the hearing. € The hearing will be conducted according to the following agenda: a. The panel will welcome their classmates to the hearing. b. Hearing participants will come to the podium to make their recommendations and arguments to the panel. d. Hearing participants and panel members will participate in an open discussion of each recommendation.
