What is a controversial issue essay?

A controversial issue essay is a paper in which the writer takes a position on an important issue about which people disagree. Writers will form their ideas through class activities such as reading and discussing articles, debating the issues, and researching the issue. In addressing a controversial issue, writers:

* examine an issue thoughtfully;

* take a position on the issue;

* develop a reasoned, well-supported argument.

The goals in writing a controversial issue essay are for writers to:

* establish their own views on the issue;

* challenge opposing views;

* convince readers to take their viewpoint seriously, if the disagree;

* strive to understand their readers' values and

assumptions to establish common ground;

* anticipate objections or questions and refute their

possible arguments.
