Veterinarians are playing and important role in protecting the nation's food supply. Dr. Hullinger will describe how scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory are working to develop tests and computer disease models to detect toxins and keep our national livestock safe from foreign diseases.

Speaker Bios

Dr. Pam Hullinger

Dr. Pam Hullinger holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from UC Davis and is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine. She has been a volunteer in South and Central America to help build lasting veterinary infrastructure for livestock and horses in undeserved countries, and is the first female veterinarian in dairy/large animal practice in the Northern California Bay Area dairy shed. In 2001, she assisted the British government in 2001 with the eradication of Foot and Mouth disease from the United Kingdom.

Patti Carothers

Patti Carothers received her Bachelors of Science in Biological science concentration in systems physiology from SJSU. Patti has over 38 years of high school science teaching experience. She is currently a science teacher at Monte Vista High School in Danville, CA. She has served as NIH Research Project Teacher for the San Joaquin County Office of Education "Drug Abuse Research Team", Director/Excursion leader Costa Rica Summer Research via Save the Rainforests, Inc., AAUW Girls on the Bay project leader for the National Northwest Girls Collaborative, Contra Costa County Clean Water Program curriculum development. For the past 8 years Patti has mentored students and teachers in all aspects of science fair project research and development. She has mentored 5 Tri Valley Science and Engineering Fair Sweepstakes winners and 5 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair competitors and winners.

Patti is the 2006-2007 Contra Costa County Teacher of the Year and has amassed many teaching awards including Region IV Northern California Educator of the Year, Who's Who among American High School Teachers, UCSD Outstanding Teacher, National Teachers Honor Roll and Warren Eukel Teacher Trust High School Teacher of the Year.
